In the second episode our team embark upon the first leg of their journey, setting off from Jakarta to reach the town of Tanjung Selor which is the capital of North Kalimantan province in Indonesia. Unfortunately, due to some challenges with the airline it is not the smoothest of starts and we also learn that the team will initially split up after the flight, taking different modes of transport to reach Tanjung Selor.
After finally arriving, the team spend the night before heading off up the river to make their way to Long Pujungan. We also begin to become acquainted with James Greenshields, who is a former Australian soldier, a veteran of the Iraq War and part of the team, whilst Philius gives us a short rendition on the Sapeh, which is a traditional lute instrument.
Lain Ngau, the Leader of the Oma Lung village, explains the long history of the Dayak people living in Long Sa’an and why in 1967 they decided to leave the village for good. This leads us to a conversation that took place in the village of Setulang a few years prior and where the idea of returning to Long Sa’an for the Dayak people really began to take shape.
The episode ends with a rather precarious boat ride as the Dayak people edge closer to being reunited with their ancestral home.
